CANTERBURY
AND NZ RUGBY HISTORY
In 1879, unions were formed in Canterbury and Wellington, indicating
that the game was becoming more formally organised. Other unions
soon followed but it was not until 1892 that the New Zealand Rugby
Football Union was formed to administer the game at national level.
Canterbury has two parts to its Union - Metropolitan and Country and
a fierce rivalry continues today when the two sides meet in their
annual clash.
THE RANFURLY SHIELD
The Canterbury Rugby
team are the current proud holders of this great icon of New Zealand Rugby.
They have one of the most successful records in this 100 year old
competition.
